Blessed Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal Aldaz, also known as Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal, was born on 13 March 1882 in Nuin, Navarra, Spain. He led a life dedicated to serving others, particularly those in need.
At the age of 30, Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal entered the Carmelite order on 31 January 1911. However, he later felt called to join the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a religious congregation that focused on medical care and assistance. Juan Bautista began his selfless work at an asylum hospital, where he dedicated himself to the care of the sick and suffering, particularly the children with physical disabilities.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Juan Bautista continued his compassionate service despite the increasing danger and persecution of the Catholic Church. Tragically, on 29 July 1936, as he was leaving the hospital after tending to the crippled children, he was seized by anti-Catholic forces.
In an attempt to force Juan Bautista to renounce his Christian faith, he was ordered to blaspheme. However, he courageously refused to comply, standing firm in his devotion to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. As a result of his refusal to renounce his beliefs, he was martyred for his faith.
Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal was executed by a firing squad on 29 July 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. His body was callously dumped in a field in Esplugas de Liobregat, Spain. His unwavering dedication to his faith and his commitment to serving others in the face of persecution earned him the status of martyr.
Recognizing his heroic virtues, Pope John Paul II declared Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal venerable on 14 May 1991, signifying the Church's recognition of his exceptional spiritual life. Later, on 25 October 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified him, formally acknowledging his martyrdom and lifting him up as an example of faith and selflessness.
Blessed Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal Aldaz is celebrated on his feast day, which falls on 29 July. Additionally, he is also commemorated on 30 July as one of the Martyred Hospitallers of Spain, a tribute to his sacrifice and dedication to the service of others.
Blessed Juan Bautista Egozcuezábal Aldaz remains an inspiration and a shining example of unwavering faith, selfless love, and devotion to the sick and marginalized. His life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the profound depth of commitment that can be found within the Catholic tradition, and his memory continues to be cherished by the faithful.
