Biography

Blessed Juan Bautista, also known as Juan Bautista Zhonie, was a married layman and catechist from the archdiocese of Antequera-Oaxaca in Mexico. He was born around the years 1660-1663 in San Francisco Cajonos, in the region of Oaxaca. Belonging to the Zapotec Indians, Juan Bautista lived during a time when the Catholic faith was heavily challenged in Mexico and the worship of idols was prevalent.

Despite the cultural pressures, Juan Bautista remained steadfast in his devotion to the Catholic Church and the teachings of Jesus Christ. He was known for his deep faith and his commitment to spreading the message of Christianity to his community. As a catechist, he played an important role in instructing others in the Catholic faith, particularly among the Zapotec people.

Tragically, Juan Bautista's unwavering faith led to his martyrdom. On the evening of September 15, 1700, a violent mob attacked him. Refusing to renounce his beliefs and bow to idols, he was hacked to death by the incensed crowd in his hometown of San Francisco Cajonos, Oaxaca. Juan Bautista's courageous refusal to abandon his Christian principles and embrace the local pagan rituals is a testament to his strong conviction and unwavering commitment to his faith.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom on July 7, 2001, officially acknowledging him as a martyr for the Catholic Church. Subsequently, on August 1, 2002, Pope John Paul II beatified Juan Bautista, honoring his sacrifice and devotion. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico, signifying the recognition of his sanctity and his inclusion in the ranks of the Blessed in the Catholic Church.

Blessed Juan Bautista continues to be venerated by the faithful, particularly in the archdiocese of Antequera-Oaxaca, where he lived and died. His feast day is celebrated on September 15th, marking the anniversary of his martyrdom. As a devoted catechist, Juan Bautista serves as an inspiration and example for all those who strive to live their faith with unwavering dedication, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
