Biography

Blessed Juan Antonio Pérez Mayo, also known as Blessed Juan Antonio, was born on 19 November 1907 in Santa Marina del Rey, a town in the diocese of Astorga, León, Spain. He was one of seven children born to Modesto Pérez and Beatriz Mayo, in a deeply religious and pious family. On 23 March 1908, Juan was baptized and thus began his journey of faith.

During his youth, Blessed Juan became a member of the Tarsicios, a religious association for children. At the age of 14, he started engaging in over-night Eucharistic adoration and began discussing his desire to become a missionary. This early encounter with the Eucharist and his passion for sharing his faith would shape the course of his life.

In 1927, Juan joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious congregation dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized. On 15 August 1927, he made his first profession, formally dedicating himself to a life of religious service. Blessed Juan continued his studies at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas in Rome, Italy, where he deepened his theological knowledge and spiritual formation. In 1930, he made his perpetual vows within the congregation, solidifying his commitment to his religious calling.

On 26 June 1932, Blessed Juan Antonio Pérez Mayo was ordained as a priest, fully entering into the ministry of the Church. He initially worked in the Basque region in 1934, serving the local community and spreading the message of God's love. Later, in 1935, he moved to Madrid, where he taught philosophy, inspiring his students with his wisdom and deep faith.

Tragically, on 22 July 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Juan was arrested by anti-Catholic forces who opposed the Church. He was imprisoned for a few days, enduring persecution for his strong belief in Catholicism. Ultimately, he was martyred for his steadfast commitment to his faith and refusal to renounce it.

Blessed Juan Antonio Pérez Mayo's martyrdom occurred on an unknown date, representing his ultimate sacrifice for the Catholic faith. His unwavering devotion and courageous example have inspired countless believers. Pope Benedict XVI recognized the sanctity of his life and martyrdom, declaring him venerable on 2 April 2011, and then beatifying him on 17 December 2011, thus bestowing upon him the title of Blessed.

Blessed Juan Antonio Pérez Mayo is honored on two feast days: 24 July and 28 November, recognizing him as one of the Oblate Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. His life continues to serve as an inspiration for Christians around the world, reminding them of the importance of unwavering faith and commitment to God's will.
