Blessed Juan Agustín Codera Marqués, also known as Blessed Agustín Codera, was born on 25 May 1883 in Barbastro, Huesca, Spain. As an infant, he was baptized just one day after his birth and grew up in a devout Catholic family.
Deeply committed to his faith, Juan Agustín Codera felt a calling to dedicate his life to God and joined the Salesians of Don Bosco. On 24 July 1919, in Carabanchel Alto, Madrid, he took his religious vows and became a member of the Salesian order. Inspired by the teachings of St. John Bosco, Blessed Agustín Codera dedicated himself to the service of others, particularly as a nurse.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Agustín Codera faced severe persecution due to his religious convictions. He would often risk his own safety to visit and care for the sick. His unwavering dedication to his mission to alleviate suffering and bring comfort to those in need drew the attention of the authorities, leading to his repeated arrests.
However, on 25 September 1936, while on his way to visit the sick, Blessed Agustín Codera was finally captured by his persecutors. He was brutally murdered, becoming a martyr for the Catholic faith. His life and death serve as a powerful testament to his unwavering faith, courage, and selflessness.
Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom on 26 June 2006, officially declaring Juan Agustín Codera Marqués as Blessed. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI bestowed upon him the honor of beatification, a ceremony that signifies his inclusion among the blessed in the Catholic Church.
Blessed Agustín Codera's feast day is celebrated on 25 September, the same date he was martyred. His life continues to inspire many, reminding us of the profound sacrifice and commitment that individuals like him have made in the pursuit of their faith and the service of others.
