Blessed Juan Agramunt Y Riera, also known as Juan of the Sacred Hearts, was born on 14 February 1907 in Almazora, Castellón, Spain. He was the son of Jose Agramunt and Antonia Riera. From a young age, Blessed Juan demonstrated a deep devotion to his faith and a calling to serve God.
In August 1922, he entered the Piarist novitiate, where he began his religious formation. After several years of study and spiritual growth, Blessed Juan made his solemn vows on 15 February 1928, committing himself fully to the service of God and the Church. His commitment and dedication led him to be ordained as a priest on 28 December 1930.
Following his ordination, Father Juan Agramunt Y Riera began teaching at Albacete, Spain, where he shared his knowledge and faith with young students. In September 1935, he was transferred to the College of Castellón de la Plana, furthering his mission of imparting education and spiritual guidance.
However, during this tumultuous time, the Spanish Civil War brought widespread persecution and violence against Catholics. Father Juan, recognizing the danger, sought refuge at his parents' home in Almazora when the persecutions began. Unfortunately, on 7 August 1936, anti-Catholic militants arrested him, and he was taken into custody.
Despite the tribulations he faced while in captivity, Father Juan Agramunt Y Riera remained steadfast in his faith. He endured cruel treatment as he refused to renounce his beliefs. It was during the night of 13 to 14 August 1936 that Father Juan was martyred, shot while in Pla de Museros, Almazora, Castellón.
Blessed Juan Agramunt Y Riera's unwavering devotion and sacrifice earned him the title of martyr. His martyrdom was officially recognized on 15 December 1994 by Pope John Paul II through a decree of martyrdom. A year later, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, raising him to the rank of Blessed.
Today, Blessed Juan Agramunt Y Riera is venerated as a model of faith, courage, and perseverance in the face of persecution. His inspiring life serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith, and his feast day is celebrated on 13 August each year.
