Biography

Blessed Joseph Outhay Phongphumi was a layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of Savannakhet, located in modern-day Laos. He was born on 1933 in Kham Koem, Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.

Joseph dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of the Catholic faith in an area where Christians faced persecution. As a catechist, he played a crucial role in instructing and guiding local believers, nurturing their faith and helping them deepen their understanding of Catholicism. His devotion to his work and his unwavering commitment to the Church made him a beloved figure among the community.

However, during the turbulent times of the mid-20th century in Southeast Asia, Christians faced immense opposition. Blessed Joseph Outhay Phongphumi, along with countless others, became a martyr for the faith. He met his tragic end on 27 April 1961 in Muang Phalane, Savannakhet, Laos.

Despite the adversity and danger that surrounded him, Joseph Outhay Phongphumi remained steadfast in his beliefs until the end, refusing to renounce his faith. His exceptional courage and staunch adherence to the Catholic Church's teachings earned him a place among the martyrs of Laos.

The veneration for Blessed Joseph Outhay Phongphumi officially began on 5 June 2015 when Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his sacrifice and sanctity. It was Pope Francis himself who went on to beatify Joseph on 11 December 2016. The beatification recognition was celebrated in Vientiane, Laos, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

The life of Blessed Joseph Outhay Phongphumi serves as a testament to the power of faith and the sacrifices made by individuals who staunchly hold on to their beliefs, even in the face of severe persecution. May his example continue to inspire and strengthen the faith of believers around the world.
