Blessed Josep Tristany Pujol, also known as Father Lluc of Saint Joseph, was a Spanish Catholic priest and member of the Discalced Carmelites, who became a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 14 December 1872 in Su, a small town in the province of Lleida, Spain.
Raised in a devout Catholic family, Josep Tristany Pujol demonstrated a strong inclination towards the priesthood from a young age. Following his calling, he entered the Carmelite Order and was ordained a priest, dedicating his life to serving God and his community.
Blessed Josep Tristany Pujol lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by political unrest and social divisions. As a result of his commitment to his faith and his refusal to renounce Catholicism, Father Lluc of Saint Joseph became a target for anti-Catholic factions during the Spanish Civil War.
With the outbreak of the civil war in 1936, religious persecution escalated, leading to the martyrdom of numerous Catholic clergy and faithful. On 20 July 1936, Father Lluc of Saint Joseph was martyred in Barcelona, Spain, for his unwavering dedication to his faith. He remained steadfast in his beliefs and chose to give up his life rather than renounce his religious convictions.
After his death, Blessed Josep Tristany Pujol's reputation for holiness and his sacrifice became widely recognized. On 22 June 2004, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing his heroic death in defense of the faith. Father Lluc of Saint Joseph was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI, a further affirmation of his sanctity and the exemplary nature of his martyrdom.
