Biography

Blessed Josep Solé Maimó was a devout Catholic and a member of the Claretian Congregation. He was born on 21 August 1890 in La Guardia Lada, Lleida, Spain. From a young age, Josep demonstrated a deep piety and a strong calling to the religious life. Influenced by the spirituality of St. Anthony Mary Claret, the founder of the Claretians, he entered the congregation and professed his vows on 6 January 1917.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which spanned from 1936 to 1939, Josep Maimó found himself caught in a wave of anti-Catholic sentiment and violence. Known for his unwavering faith and dedication to his calling, he courageously remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and his religious vocation.

Tragically, on 5 September 1936, in Terrasa, Barcelona, Spain, Josep met a martyr's death for his faith. Amidst the chaos of the era, he was tortured and ultimately martyred, joining the ranks of the many who lost their lives due to their allegiance to Catholicism.

Following his death, Josep Maimó's reputation for holiness continued to grow, and his sanctity was eventually recognized by the Catholic Church. On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom, acknowledging his sacrificial offering for the sake of faith. On 21 October 2017, in a joyous ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, Josep Maimó was officially beatified by Pope Francis, with the beatification Mass presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.

Blessed Josep Solé Maimó is remembered and venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His feast day is celebrated on 5 September, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is included in the joint feast day of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, observed on 1 February.

Today, Blessed Josep Solé Maimó serves as a shining example of faith, courage, and devotion to all Catholics. His martyrdom, having been recognized by the Church, inspires believers to remain steadfast in their faith and to stand firm in the face of persecution.
