Biography

Blessed Josep Sala Picó, also known as Josep Sala Pico, was born on 24 June 1888 in Pons, Lleida, Spain. He embarked on his spiritual journey by studying at the seminary of Seo de Urgel. After years of dedicated study, he was ordained as a Catholic priest on 15 April 1911.

Following his ordination, Blessed Josep Sala Picó joined the Diocesan Laborer Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on 12 August 1914. This religious order is known for its commitment to serving the community and spreading the message of Christ's love and compassion. Blessed Josep Sala Picó wholeheartedly embraced their mission and diligently carried out his priestly duties throughout his life.

Blessed Josep Sala Picó's exceptional dedication and leadership skills were recognized by the Church, leading to his appointment as the Director of the seminary in Segovia, Spain. In this role, he guided and mentored a new generation of priests, shaping them into compassionate and committed servants of God. His exemplary teaching and spiritual guidance left a lasting impact on the seminarians under his care.

Later, Blessed Josep Sala Picó assumed the position of Dean of the College of Vocations in Toledo, Spain. As Dean, he played a vital role in discerning the vocations of aspiring priests and fostering an environment of discernment, prayer, and spiritual growth. Here, too, he touched the lives of many young men who found their calling through his guidance.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, the Catholic Church faced immense persecution from Communists. On 23 July 1936, Blessed Josep Sala Picó was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to his priestly mission. He was shot on the Paseo del Tránsito in Toledo, Spain, leaving behind a legacy of courage and martyrdom.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed Josep Sala Picó were recognized and honored by the Catholic Church. On 6 July 1993, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, acknowledging the heroic virtues he displayed throughout his life. Subsequently, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him, and recognizing his martyrdom as a testament to his steadfast faith.

Blessed Josep Sala Picó's life serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the service of God and the Church, even in the face of immense adversity.
