Biography

Blessed Josep Reñé Prenafeta, also known as Blessed Josep Reñé, was a Mercedarian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on June 15, 1903, in Lleida, Spain. Having felt called to serve God from a young age, Josep entered the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians, to dedicate his life to the service of others.

As a Mercedarian priest, Blessed Josep Reñé embraced the charism of his order, which focused on the redemption of captives and the spiritual well-being of those in need. He dedicated himself to his religious duties, offering spiritual guidance and support to those under his care, as well as serving the broader community.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution swept through Spain, Blessed Josep Reñé became a target for his faith. On August 16, 1936, in Barcelona, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs. Despite facing severe persecution and the threat to his own life, he remained faithful to his calling until the end.

Recognizing the sacrifice of Blessed Josep Reñé, the Catholic Church commenced the process of his beatification. He was venerated on December 19, 2011, when Pope Benedict XVI decreed his martyrdom. Finally, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." This ceremony recognized Josep's exemplary life of faith, his martyrdom, and his enduring legacy as a defender of religious freedom and human dignity.

Blessed Josep Reñé Prenafeta serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the virtues of faith, courage, and unwavering dedication to God's calling. His life and martyrdom stand as a testament to the strength of one's convictions and the profound impact a single individual can have on the world. On his feast day, August 16, people come together to honor and remember this holy man, seeking his intercession and striving to follow in his footsteps of selfless service and sacrifice.
