Feast Day: September 5
Death: September 5, 1936
Blessed Josep Puig Bret was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on an unknown date and location, but his life is marked by his dedication to the service of God and his fellow human beings.
Blessed Josep Puig Bret entered the Claretians and made his religious profession on 6 January 1880, fully committing himself to a life of faith and ministry. After several years of formation and training, he was ordained a priest on 24 September 1883. As a Claretian priest, he selflessly served the people, spreading the Gospel and providing spiritual guidance.
Tragically, during the turbulent Spanish Civil War, in which Catholic clergy were targeted, Blessed Josep Puig Bret was martyred for his faith. On 5 September 1936, in Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain, he joyfully offered his life as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church.
His feast days are celebrated on 5 September, the anniversary of his martyrdom, and on 1 February, as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War. These feast days serve as an opportunity to honor the courage and sacrifice of these faithful men who lived and died for their beliefs.
The exemplary life and martyrdom of Blessed Josep Puig Bret were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom, showing official acknowledgment of his heroic witness in the face of persecution. This declaration paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 21 October 2017 at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy Father.
Blessed Josep Puig Bret stands as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the courage and fidelity required to follow Christ, even in the darkest of times. Through his intercession, may we find the strength to live our faith with joy and commitment, always seeking the will of God in our lives.
