Blessed Josep Plana Rebugent, also known as Brother Emeri Josep, was a devoted member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, known for his unwavering dedication to his faith and education. He was born on September 16, 1900, in Sellera, a small village in Girona, Spain.
From a young age, Josep demonstrated a strong desire to serve God and deepen his understanding of the Catholic faith. Recognizing his calling, he joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious order founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle that focused on providing education to the poor.
As a member of the order, Brother Emeri Josep dedicated his life to the education and spiritual formation of young people. He served as a teacher and mentor, guiding his students with wisdom, kindness, and love. Josep had a deep passion for instilling moral values and the teachings of the Catholic Church in his students, recognizing the importance of faith-based education.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution and violence engulfed the country. Brother Emeri Josep, along with many other Catholic clergy and religious, became targets for their commitment to the Church. On September 12, 1936, in the town of Riudellots, Girona, Spain, Brother Emeri Josep was martyred for his faith. He courageously embraced martyrdom, refusing to renounce his beliefs despite the threats and dangers he faced.
Blessed Josep Plana Rebugent's exemplary devotion and sacrifice did not go unnoticed, and his reputation for holiness spread within the Catholic community. As a result, he was venerated by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 2004, with a decree of martyrdom. This official recognition acknowledged his martyrdom and affirmed his status as a blessed in the Catholic Church.
Three years later, on October 28, 2007, Blessed Josep Plana Rebugent was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI. This beatification ceremony publicly recognized his heroic virtue and his willingness to give his life for Christ, making him an inspiration and intercessor for Catholics around the world.
His feast day is celebrated on September 12th each year, commemorating the anniversary of his martyrdom. Blessed Josep Plana Rebugent remains a shining example of faith, courage, and devotion to the Catholic Church, inspiring others to live out their faith with unwavering commitment and love.
