Blessed Josep Maria Vidal Seg√∫ was born on 3 February 1912 in the town of Secuits, Tarragona, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and received his early education at convent schools in Solsona and Calanda.
As a young man, Josep felt called to serve God and joined the Dominican Order. He entered the novitiate and was professed in Valencia, Spain, on 4 October 1929. After completing his religious formation, he was ordained a priest on Holy Saturday in 1936, in Valencia.
Tragically, the Spanish Civil War was underway at that time, and it posed great challenges and dangers for those in religious life. Despite the perilous circumstances, Father Josep Maria Vidal Seg√∫ remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and his vocation.
On 25 September 1936, while serving as a priest in Piera, Tarragona, Spain, Father Josep was martyred for his unwavering devotion to Catholicism. He bravely suffered persecution and endured a violent death at the hands of those who opposed the Church during this turbulent period.
Father Josep Maria Vidal Seg√∫'s heroic witness to his faith did not go unnoticed, even in the midst of the war. His martyrdom exemplified his unwavering commitment to God and love for his fellow human beings. For these reasons, on 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II acknowledged his martyrdom through a decree of martyrdom, thus allowing for his veneration.
Finally, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Josep Maria Vidal Seg√∫, recognizing him as a Blessed of the Catholic Church. His beatification serves as a testament to his holiness, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of his life and death.
Blessed Josep Maria Vidal Seg√∫ stands as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding us of the importance of remaining faithful to our beliefs even in the face of adversity. His life and martyrdom continue to be celebrated on his feast day, which is observed on 25 September each year.
