Biography

Blessed Josep Maria Tolaguera Oliva, also known as Brother Faust Lluís, was a devout member of the Christian Brothers, a religious congregation dedicated to education. He was born on 14 March 1904 in L'Escala, Girona, Spain, to a humble family. From a young age, Josep Maria showed a profound dedication to his faith and a strong inclination towards teaching.

In pursuit of his vocation, he joined the Christian Brothers and began his formation in their educational institute. He displayed exceptional talents as a teacher and had a remarkable ability to connect with his students, inspiring them with his genuine love and care. His dedication to his students went beyond the call of duty as he sought to not only educate them academically but also instill in them strong moral values and a genuine understanding of the Catholic faith.

Tragically, during the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution swept the country, targeting Catholic priests, religious brothers, and other clergy. Brother Faust Lluís, along with many others, became a victim of this persecution. He was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious life on 26 August 1936 in Tarragona, Spain.

The heroic sacrifice of Brother Faust Lluís did not go unnoticed, and his sanctity was recognized by the Catholic Church. On 28 June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, officially acknowledging his exemplary witness to the faith. Subsequently, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Josep Maria Tolaguera Oliva in a solemn ceremony held in Tarragona, Spain.

Today, Blessed Josep Maria Tolaguera Oliva stands as a shining example of Christian dedication and love for education. His life serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by many during times of persecution, and his beatification has brought his inspiring story to the forefront, encouraging others to follow in his footsteps of faith, love, and service.
