Biography

Blessed Josep Maria Jordá i Jordá, also known as Josep Maria Jordá, was a devout Catholic and a member of the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation. He was born on 17 November 1884 in Tarragona, Spain, and grew up in a devout Christian family. Throughout his life, he displayed a strong inclination towards spirituality and a deep love for God.

Josep Maria Jordá entered the religious life, joining the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation, where he dedicated himself to the monastic way of life. He embraced the Benedictine Rule, which emphasized prayer, work, and community living. As a member of the congregation, he strived for holiness and served as an example to his fellow brothers.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Josep Maria Jordá courageously stood firm in his faith and unwavering commitment to Christ. He lived during a time when Catholicism faced severe persecution, and religious communities were targeted by anti-Catholic forces. Despite the dangers and risks involved, Josep Maria Jordá refused to renounce his faith and abandon his religious responsibilities.

Tragically, Blessed Josep Maria Jordá met his martyrdom on 26 July 1936 in "Pont Negre," Tarragona, Spain. He, along with many other religious members and faithful Catholics, endured persecution and violence due to their refusal to abandon their religious beliefs. Martyred for his fidelity to the Gospel and his commitment to God, Blessed Josep Maria Jordá paid the ultimate price for his faith.

Following his death, Josep Maria Jordá was buried in the Cripta de los Monjes Mártires, located in the Montserrat Basilica in Barcelona. His tomb serves as a reminder of his sacrifice and the steadfastness of his devotion.

Recognizing his martyrdom and the inspiration he provides to the faithful, Pope Benedict XVI venerated Blessed Josep Maria Jordá on 28 June 2012 through a decree of martyrdom. This act affirmed his heroic witness to the faith. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis further acknowledged his sanctity by beatifying him, elevating him to the rank of the Blessed.

The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, where people gathered to honor Blessed Josep Maria Jordá and celebrate his virtuous life. His beatification serves as recognition of his exceptional holiness and faithfulness to Christ, which serves as an inspiration to Catholics worldwide.
