Biography

Blessed Josep Figuera Rey, also known as Brother Llorenç Gabriel, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He is recognized as a martyr for his faith, having been martyred during the Spanish Civil War. Blessed Josep Figuera Rey's feast day is commemorated on the 9th of August.

He was born on the 22nd of August 1912 in Pobla de Segur, a town located in the province of Lleida, Spain. From a young age, Josep showed a strong devotion to his Catholic faith and a desire to follow a religious vocation. He joined the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers, who are dedicated to the education and formation of young people.

As a member of the religious community, Brother Llorenç Gabriel lived a life characterized by humility, dedication, and service to others. He tirelessly worked as a teacher and shared his knowledge and faith with the students entrusted to his care. He sought to educate both the mind and the heart, instilling in his students the values of integrity, compassion, and love for God.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, the Catholic Church faced persecution due to its opposition to the ideologies of the warring factions. In this hostile climate, Brother Llorenç Gabriel fearlessly and openly expressed his faith, refusing to renounce his religious beliefs.

Tragically, on the 9th of August 1936, Brother Llorenç Gabriel was martyred in Barcelona, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. He courageously embraced his sufferings and remained steadfast in his faith until the end, becoming a witness to the power of Christian martyrdom.

In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom on the 22nd of June 2004, officially recognizing Brother Llorenç Gabriel as someone who had given his life for the sake of the Gospel. Furthermore, on the 28th of October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and offering him as an example of faith and commitment to future generations.

He serves as a shining example of faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel in the face of adversity.
