Blessed Josep Domènech Bonet, also known as Benet of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Benedict of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and Giuseppe Doménech Bonet, was born on 6 September 1892 in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Barcelona, Spain. He dedicated his life to the Capuchin Franciscan Friars Minor, joining their order in 1909. On 23 February 1913, Josep made his solemn profession, fully embracing the Capuchin way of life. He was ordained a priest on 29 May 1915, and his compassionate and humble nature made him beloved among his community.
Father Josep served at the Capuchin house in Manresa, Spain, undertaking various roles such as the novice master and porter. His dedication to guiding and mentoring young novices in their spiritual formation was exemplary.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, on 22 July 1936, Communist militia overran the Capuchin house in Manresa. Realizing the imminent danger, Father Josep was forced to abandon the convent and went into hiding. Unfortunately, his refuge was discovered by the Marxists, who captured him and subjected him to extreme torture. The militants demanded that he blaspheme, renouncing his faith, but Josep remained steadfast in his devotion to God, refusing to betray his beliefs.
On 6 August 1936, Father Josep Domènech Bonet was martyred in Pont de Vilamura, Manresa, Barcelona, Spain. He remained faithful until the end, refusing to succumb to the pressures of his tormentors. The Catholic Church recognizes his martyrdom, acknowledging his heroic witness to Christ and the Gospel.
In recognition of his extraordinary faith and steadfastness, Blessed Josep Domènech Bonet was venerated on 23 January 2020 by Pope Francis, who declared him a martyr. Then, on 6 November 2021, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Manresa, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, highlighting the significance of Father Josep's life and sacrifice.
Blessed Josep Domènech Bonet serves as an inspiration to all believers, as his devotion, courage, and unwavering commitment to his faith continue to resonate.
