Biography

Blessed Josep Casademont Vila, also known as Blessed Josep Casademont, was born on 12 March 1915 in Sant Feliu de Pallarols, Girona, Spain. He was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret.

At a young age, Josep felt a calling to serve God and joined the Claretians. He made his religious profession on 15 August 1931, dedicating his life to spreading the Gospel and serving the Church. However, his journey was cut short during the tragic Spanish Civil War.

During the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, many clergy and religious were targeted for their faith. Sadly, Blessed Josep Casademont Vila became one of its victims. He was martyred by being executed by gunfire on 26 July 1936 in Lleida, Spain. His courage in staying true to his faith even in the face of persecution and death has inspired many.

Blessed Josep Casademont Vila is remembered as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who gave their lives for their faith during this tumultuous period. Their stories serve as a testimony to the strength of their beliefs and their commitment to Christ.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 21 December 2016. This decree acknowledged his heroic virtue and sacrifice. Later, on 21 October 2017, he was beatified by Pope Francis in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.

Blessed Josep Casademont Vila's feast day is celebrated on 26 July, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also honored along with the other Spanish Claretian Martyrs on 1 February.

Through his life and witness, Blessed Josep Casademont Vila continues to inspire and intercede for those facing persecution and adversity in their faith. His memory serves as a reminder of the courage and fortitude required to remain steadfast in one's beliefs.
