Feast Day: August 4
Birth: January 15, 1873
Death: August 4, 1936
Blessed Josep Batalla Parramon, also known as Blessed Josep Battala, was born on 15 January 1873 in Abella, Lleida, Spain. He entered the Salesian congregation and made his solemn vows on 7 December 1894, fully dedicating himself to serving God and the Church.
After completing his studies, Josep was ordained as a priest in 1900. He had a deep passion for education and became a teacher, imparting knowledge and fostering the spiritual growth of young students. His dedication and devotion garnered him the respect and admiration of both his students and fellow clergy.
However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936 posed a great threat to the Catholic Church and its clergy. Anti-Christian forces sought to suppress religious influence and targeted priests for their faith. At the beginning of the conflict, Blessed Josep Batalla Parramon was expelled from his teaching duties due to his religious affiliation.
Unfazed by the danger surrounding him, Josep courageously continued to live out his vocation by providing assistance to those wounded in the conflict. He fearlessly ministered to both the physical and spiritual needs of the injured, offering them solace and hope in their darkest moments.
Sadly, on 4 August 1936, Blessed Josep Batalla Parramon was martyred for the crime of being a priest. The anti-Christian forces, driven by their hostility towards the Church, took his life, viewing him as a symbol of faith they sought to eradicate. His unwavering commitment to his calling to serve God and his fellow human beings left an indelible mark of heroism and sacrifice.
Recognizing his immeasurable faith and the sacrifice he made, Pope John Paul II declared Josep Batalla Parramon's martyrdom on 20 December 1999. Blessed Josep Batalla Parramon was beatified by the same Pope on 11 March 2001, as a testament to his exemplary life and steadfast dedication to his Christian faith.
Blessed Josep Batalla Parramon is honored and venerated on multiple feast days. He is commemorated on 4 August, the day of his martyrdom in Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, he is remembered alongside other Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalonia, and Aragón on 22 September, further highlighting the impact and significance of his martyrdom within the Salesian community and the broader Catholic Church. His life continues to inspire believers to stand firm in their faith and to be willing to face adversity for the sake of the Gospel.
