Biography

Blessed Josep Ausellé Rigau was a Spanish Catholic who was born on 5 July 1913 in La Cellera, Girona, Spain. He dedicated his life to religious service and became a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Josep Ausellé Rigau, along with many other Claretian missionaries, faced immense persecution for their faith. He, unfortunately, became one of the martyrs of this war, laying down his life for his beliefs. He met his martyrdom on 18 October 1936 in Cervera, Lleida, Spain.

Blessed Josep Ausellé Rigau's exemplary life and the sacrifice he made for his faith were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him. The beatification recognition ceremony was held in the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. It was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who represented the Pope.

Devotion to Blessed Josep Ausellé Rigau is celebrated on two feast days. The first feast day is on 18 October, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also honored on 1 February as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

Blessed Josep Ausellé Rigau's beatification by Pope Francis on 21 October 2017, and his subsequent veneration as a blessed, serve as a testament to his holiness, devotion, and valiant witness to the Christian faith in the face of persecution.
