Biography

Blessed Josep Alsina Casas, also known as Agustí of Montclar or Agustí de Montclar de Donzell, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who was born on 8 December 1907 in Montclar, Lleida, Spain. He was deeply committed to his faith from an early age, and this led him to enter the religious life.

On 19 December 1928, Josep Alsina Casas professed as a member of the Capuchin Order, taking his vows and dedicating himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Recognized for his spiritual ardor and dedication, he was ordained as a priest on 20 February 1932.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Josep Alsina Casas fell victim to the violence perpetrated by Marxists. On 12 August 1936, in the area of Pedralbes, Barcelona, Spain, he was murdered for his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs.

His life and martyrdom were regarded as a powerful example of faith and devotion. As a result, Pope Francis, on 5 June 2015, declared him venerable through a decree of martyrdom, recognizing his supreme sacrifice in defense of his faith. Later, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony at the Cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father.

Blessed Josep Alsina Casas is honored and celebrated on his memorial day, 12 August, where Catholics around the world offer prayers and commemorate his life and martyrdom. Many view him as a hero of the faith who courageously witnessed his beliefs in the face of severe persecution.

His beatification serves as an inspiration for all believers, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity. The life and sacrifice of Blessed Josep Alsina Casas continue to resonate, calling for unity, peace, and justice in a world often torn apart by violence and intolerance.
