Feast Day: August 27
Death: August 27, 1936
Blessed Josefa Bonilla Benavides was a devout Catholic lay woman from the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. She is remembered as one of the countless martyrs who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War due to their unwavering faith in Christ.
Josefa was born in 1897 and dedicated her life to serving God and her community. She lived a humble and virtuous existence, committing herself to prayer, works of charity, and the spiritual wellbeing of those around her. Her love for God and her fellow human beings was evident in her daily actions, as she selflessly offered her time and resources to support those in need.
Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, causing great unrest and a violent persecution of Catholics throughout the country. During this period of intense religious persecution, Josefa courageously refused to renounce her faith, even in the face of grave danger. Her unwavering commitment to Christ led to her martyrdom on 27th August 1936 in Posadas, Córdoba, Spain.
For many years, Blessed Josefa's sacrifice remained unrecognized, but her life and martyrdom were eventually remembered and honored. On 23rd November 2020, Pope Francis declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues and affirming her place among the blessed. Then, on 16th October 2021, Pope Francis beatified her, bestowing her the title of "Blessed." The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
Blessed Josefa Bonilla Benavides stands as a shining example of unwavering faith and devotion to God, even in the face of dire circumstances. Her life serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith and the profound impact that even seemingly ordinary individuals can have on the world through their witness to Christ's love and truth. We honor Blessed Josefa's memory and pray that her intercession may bring us closer to the heavenly kingdom she now enjoys.
