Biography

Blessed Jose María Bengoa Aranguren, also known as Father Juan Pedro of Saint Anthony, was a Passionist priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 19 June 1890 in Santa Agata de Guesatíbar, Guip√∫zcoa, Spain.

Blessed Jose María Bengoa Aranguren grew up in a devout Catholic family and showed a deep devotion to his faith from a young age. Recognizing his vocation to the priesthood, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest for the Passionist congregation.

As a Passionist priest, Father Juan Pedro devoted himself to a life of prayer, penance, and preaching the Gospel. He had a special affinity for the suffering of Christ and sought to imitate Him in every aspect of his life. Many were deeply moved by his compassionate nature and his ability to bring hope to those who were suffering.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Father Juan Pedro courageously stood firm in his faith and continued his priestly ministry, despite the increasing dangers and persecution faced by the Catholic Church. He fearlessly provided solace and spiritual guidance to those in need, even as the country descended into chaos.

Tragically, on 25 September 1936, Father Juan Pedro was captured by anti-Catholic forces in Carrión de Calatrava, Ciudad Real, Spain. Refusing to renounce his faith, he bravely endured torture and humiliation, remaining steadfast in his dedication to Christ and the Church.

Finally, on that fateful day, Blessed Jose María Bengoa Aranguren was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. His courage and unwavering love for God became a powerful testament of faith and devotion in the face of extreme persecution.

Blessed Jose María Bengoa Aranguren was officially recognized for his martyrdom on 28 November 1988 by Pope John Paul II, who declared him venerable. On 1 October 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Juan Pedro, acknowledging his exemplary life and sacrificial death.

Today, Blessed Jose María Bengoa Aranguren is remembered as a shining example of faith and martyrdom. His life reminds us of the great sacrifices made by countless individuals during the Spanish Civil War. He stands as a courageous witness to the power of faith, inspiring all who hear his story to remain steadfast in their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His feast days are celebrated on 25 September and 23 July, the latter being recognized as one of the Martyrs of Daimiel.
