Blessed José Villanova Tormo, also known as José Tormo, was born on 20 January 1902 in Turís, Valencia, Spain. Baptized at the mere age of two days, he later responded to the call of God and joined the Salesians of Don Bosco during his late teens. After years of spiritual formation and discernment, José made his profession on 25 July 1920 in Carabanchel Alto, Madrid.

Following his profession, José continued his studies and was ordained a priest in 1929. With a deep commitment to his faith and a desire to serve others, he dedicated himself to the vocation of teaching. José served as a teacher in Salamanca and Madrid, where he left a lasting impact on his students, fostering their intellectual growth and guiding them towards a greater understanding of their Catholic faith.

Tragically, during the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed José Villanova Tormo became a victim of religious persecution. As a priest, he was deemed a threat and targeted for his unwavering commitment to his religious calling. On 29 September 1936, he was martyred in Madrid, Spain, for the sole reason of being a priest.

The courageous martyrdom of Blessed José Villanova Tormo exemplified his unwavering dedication to his faith, even in the face of extreme adversity. His willingness to give his life in defense of his beliefs serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live their faith authentically.

Recognizing his heroic sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI declared José Villanova Tormo as venerable on 26 June 2006, with the decree of martyrdom. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and virtue.

Blessed José Villanova Tormo is venerated on 29 September, the day of his martyrdom. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the power of faith, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of persecution.
