During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, José Vigil became a victim of the religious persecution that swept through the country. He bravely stayed true to his faith, fearlessly ministering to his flock despite the risks involved. Regrettably, his dedication to the Gospel ultimately led to his martyrdom.
On 18 July 1936, José Vigil was tragically shot in Sevilla, Spain, by those who sought to silence his religious message. Severely wounded, he was rushed to the hospital where he passed away the following day, 19 July 1936.
José Vigil became the first priest to be murdered in the persecution that occurred during the Spanish Civil War. His courage and steadfastness in the face of adversity are a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to God's teachings.
Recognizing his sacrifice and dedication, Pope Francis proclaimed José Vigil Cabrerizo as a Blessed on 22 June 2023, through a decree of martyrdom. This act of beatification serves to honor his memory and uphold his example for future generations of Catholics.
Blessed José Vigil Cabrerizo's feast day is celebrated on 19 July, the anniversary of his martyrdom. He is remembered for his willingness to lay down his life for the sake of his faith and the love he showed for his fellow believers.
