Biography

Blessed José Vergara Echevarria was born on 18 June 1908 in Almándoz, Navarra, Spain. He joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and was ordained a priest in 1934. Blessed José dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church.

As a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Blessed José Vergara Echevarria was actively involved in training and teaching new members of the congregation. He displayed great dedication and commitment to his vocation, imparting his knowledge and sharing his faith with others.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Blessed José became a victim of religious persecution. On 29 September 1936, he was mercilessly machine-gunned at a ruined house next to the Pont de Ser, Seriñá, Girona, Spain, by members of the Communist militia. His martyrdom is a testament to his unwavering faith and his refusal to renounce his commitment to God, even in the face of persecution and death.

After his martyrdom, Blessed José Vergara Echevarria was buried in a mass grave nearby. However, on 30 March 1940, his relics were re-interred in a niche in the cemetery of Canet de Mar, Spain. This final resting place became a site of veneration for countless faithful who recognized Blessed José as a martyr for the Catholic faith.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared his veneration on 8 July 2016, and later, on 6 May 2017, he was beatified by the same pope. The beatification ceremony took place in the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Girona, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. The beatification of Blessed José Vergara Echevarria serves as a reminder of his exemplary life and unwavering commitment to Christ, inspiring generations of Catholics to uphold and defend their faith.
