Biography

Blessed José Trinidad Rangel Y Montaño, also known as Father José, was a Catholic priest and martyr who is celebrated for his unwavering dedication to his parishioners during a time of religious persecution in Mexico. Born on June 4, 1887, in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico, he grew up in a devout Catholic family.

Father José dedicated his life to the service of God and his community. He was ordained a priest and became the parish priest in Silao, Mexico. Known for his zeal and pastoral care, he ministered to his parishioners with great compassion, providing spiritual guidance and support during challenging times, including the Mexican Revolution.

During this turbulent period in Mexican history, the government enacted laws that required priests to register. However, due to his commitment to his faith and refusal to compromise his religious principles, Father José chose not to register. As a result, in 1927, he went into hiding in León, seeking to protect his ability to practice his priestly duties.

Father José's commitment to his vocation did not waver even in hiding. In April 1927, he risked his life to secretly celebrate Holy Week with the Minims in San Francisco del Rincón. Despite the dangerous environment, he fearlessly administered the sacraments and visited the sick in the hospital, remaining steadfast in his duty to tend to the spiritual needs of his flock.

Unfortunately, Father José's courageous actions were discovered by the authorities on April 22, 1927. He was arrested, interrogated, and subjected to torture in an attempt to force him to renounce his faith and allegiance to the Catholic Church. However, his love for God and his unwavering commitment to his vocation could not be shaken.

Father José valiantly confessed to being a priest, fully aware of the dire consequences awaiting him. On April 25, 1927, he was ultimately martyred, executed by a firing squad at the Rancho de San Joaquín in Jalisco, Mexico. He is remembered for his incredible faith and courage in the face of persecution.

The remarkable life and martyrdom of Father José Trinidad Rangel Y Montaño did not go unnoticed. His exemplary dedication to his faith and his ultimate sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 22, 2004, he was venerated by Pope John Paul II. Later, on November 20, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him as a blessed. The beatification ceremony was celebrated by Cardinal Saraiva Martins in Guadalajara, Mexico, marking the official recognition of Father José's sanctity.
