Biography

Blessed José Sánchez Medina, also known as Blessed José Sánchez Medina of Archena, was a Spanish Catholic priest in the diocese of Cartagena, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on August 3, 1900, in the town of Archena, located in the Murcia region of Spain.

As a young man, José Sánchez Medina felt a calling to serve God and the Church, leading him to pursue studies for the priesthood. After completing his seminary formation, he was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Cartagena. Known for his deep devotion to the Catholic faith and his compassion for others, he dedicated his life to carrying out his pastoral duties and providing spiritual guidance to the faithful.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which ravaged Spain from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution and violence against the clergy were widespread. Blessed José Sánchez Medina became a victim of this brutality, facing persecution for his unwavering faith and his commitment to the Church.

On October 17, 1936, in his hometown of Archena, José Sánchez Medina was arrested for his religious beliefs. He endured imprisonment, torture, and ultimately gave his life as a witness to his faith. Many years later, on December 1, 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized José Sánchez Medina's martyrdom by decree, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." This recognition acknowledges his sacrifice and the virtues he exemplified throughout his life.

On November 11, 2017, a special beatification ceremony was held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, to honor Blessed José Sánchez Medina. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, and it marked a momentous occasion for the Church and the faithful who admired and revered Blessed José.

Blessed José Sánchez Medina's life and martyrdom continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the enduring faith and courage exhibited by countless Catholics during times of persecution.
