Blessed José Rescalvo Ruiz, a devout priest of the archdiocese of Granada, Spain, was born on 20 May 1880 in the small town of Juviles, located in the province of Granada. Throughout his life, he demonstrated a deep devotion to his faith and a strong desire to serve God and His people.
After completing his studies, José was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to ministering to the faithful in the city of Granada and its surroundings. He was known for his profound love for the sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, through which he brought comfort and spiritual guidance to countless individuals seeking God's mercy and forgiveness.
However, José's unwavering commitment to his faith and his fearlessness in defending Catholic principles would tragically lead to his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of this tumultuous period, when religious persecution was rampant, José remained steadfast in his loyalty to the Catholic Church.
On 29 September 1936, in the town of Cádiar, Granada, José Rescalvo Ruiz was martyred for his faith. Despite the imminent danger he faced, he never wavered in his commitment to his beliefs. His courageous and unwavering stand for his Catholic faith served as an inspiration to many.
Blessed José Rescalvo Ruiz was recognized for his heroic virtue and martyrdom by Pope Francis on 28 November 2019 when he was declared venerable. Later, on 26 February 2022, the Holy Father beatified him, signifying that he is now honored as "Blessed." The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain, where thousands gathered to celebrate the life and witness of this holy priest.
Today, Blessed José Rescalvo Ruiz stands as a shining example of faith, courage, and devotion to the Catholic Church.
