Biography

Blessed José Ramón Ferragud Girbes, also known as José Ramón Ferragud Girbes, was born on 10 October 1887 in Algemesí, Valencia, Spain. From an early age, he exhibited strong faith and devotion to the Catholic Church. At just two days old, he was baptized at his parish church of Saint James the Apostle.

Throughout his life, José Ramón Ferragud Girbes remained a devout layman in the archdiocese of Valencia. He married Josefa Borras Borras on 21 January 1914, and together they had eight children. Despite his family responsibilities, José Ramón Ferragud Girbes dedicated himself to his faith and actively participated in the life of his parish.

He was a regular attendee of daily Mass, finding solace and strength in the Eucharist. Additionally, he became involved in various lay apostolates within his parish, including the Union of Catholic Workers. As a catechist, he shared his knowledge and love for the Catholic faith with others. José Ramón Ferragud Girbes had a deep concern for the well-being of his fellow Christians and tirelessly wrote about the conditions they faced in Spain.

During a tumultuous period in Spain's history, the Spanish Civil War, José Ramón Ferragud Girbes demonstrated great courage and commitment to his faith. He stood guard to protect churches from anti-Catholic militia men, who were hostile towards Catholicism. His unwavering dedication to defending his faith led to his arrest multiple times.

Sadly, José Ramón Ferragud Girbes was ultimately martyred for his Catholic beliefs. On 24 September 1936, he was shot and killed in Alzira, Valencia. His final words, shouted defiantly before his death, were "Viva Christo Rey!" meaning "Long live Christ the King!" His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to the Catholic Church.

Blessed José Ramón Ferragud Girbes was officially recognized for his martyrdom by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree on 18 December 2000. He was beatified by the same pope on 11 March 2001, acknowledging his heroic virtue and his sacrifice for the Catholic faith.

Today, Blessed José Ramón Ferragud Girbes is venerated and remembered on his feast day, which falls on 24 September. His life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to Catholics around the world, reminding them of the importance of standing firm in their faith, even in the face of adversity.
