Biography

Blessed José Quintas Durán, also known as Blessed José Quintas, was a young layman in the diocese of Almería, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 21 November 1914 in Almería, Spain.

José grew up in a devout Catholic family and displayed an early piety. He had a deep love for Christ and was actively engaged in the life of his local parish. Known for his kindness and generosity, José was always willing to help those in need.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, José found himself caught up in the religious persecution that plagued the country. Despite the dangers, he remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his Catholic beliefs. José continued to attend Mass and seek solace in prayer, even as the persecution intensified.

On 22 May 1938, in Turón, Granada, Spain, José Quintas Durán was martyred for his faith. The circumstances of his death remain unclear, but it is believed that he was executed for his unwavering commitment to Christ and refusal to abandon his Catholic identity.

José Quintas Durán's reputation for holiness and his martyrdom became widely known, and his cause for beatification was opened. On 14 June 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue and martyrdom. Then, on 25 March 2017, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony of José Quintas Durán in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification was a momentous occasion where Cardinal Angelo Amato, the representative of Pope Francis, declared José Quintas Durán blessed. This recognition also serves as an inspiration for the faithful to emulate the faith and courage displayed by Blessed José Quintas.
