Biography

Blessed José Pampliega Santiago, also known as Berardo José, was a devout monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 26 August 1912 in the town of Cañizar de Argaño, located in the province of Burgos, Spain.

From a young age, José displayed a deep spiritual inclination and a desire to dedicate his life to God. He entered the Marist Brothers and pursued his vocation with great enthusiasm and commitment. Known for his kindness, humility, and outstanding devotion to his religious duties, José quickly became respected and loved by his peers and superiors alike.

However, tragedy struck Spain during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War. This conflict, characterized by intense political and ideological tensions, led to the persecution and martyrdom of many Catholics and religious figures. Sadly, José fell victim to this wave of violence.

On 4 August 1936, Blessed José Pampliega Santiago met his untimely death in Valencia, Spain. He was martyred for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. Even in the face of persecution and imminent danger, José remained steadfast and courageous, committing himself to his spiritual calling until his last breath.
