Blessed José Pérez Fernández, also known as José el Martirio, was a layman hailing from the diocese of Almería, Spain. Born on September 4, 1912, in Sorbas, Almería, he grew up in a deeply Catholic environment. José was a devoted member of Catholic Action, an organization that aimed to promote and defend the Catholic faith in society.
During a time of intense persecution against Catholics in Spain, José fearlessly carried out the mission of distributing the Catholic periodical "La Independencia." This act of courage and commitment to his faith was particularly remarkable in the face of anti-Catholic sentiments prevailing at the time.
However, his unwavering dedication to spreading the Catholic message did not go unnoticed. José was arrested by the authorities in Almería due to his involvement in the distribution of Catholic literature. Subsequently, he was transferred to Turón, in the province of Granada, where he would ultimately meet his martyrdom.
On May 20, 1938, José Pérez Fernández, along with numerous other prisoners, was executed in an isolated olive grove outside Turón. Prior to his execution, the executioner instructed José to dig his own grave. Protesting against this demand, José boldly mocked the executioner, refusing to comply. His defiant act of resistance ultimately sealed his fate.
José's steadfast commitment to his faith, even in the face of persecution and imminent death, made him a symbol of Christian courage and resilience. His martyrdom demonstrated his unwavering trust in God and his refusal to renounce his beliefs, even at the cost of his life.
Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial death of José Pérez Fernández, Pope Francis declared him blessed on March 25, 2017. The beatification ceremony was held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the ceremony.
Today, Blessed José Pérez Fernández serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding them of the importance of unwavering faith and steadfast commitment to God, even in the face of adversity and persecution. His feast day is celebrated on May 20, and in some calendars, also on May 29 ‚Äì a day to honor his memory and seek his intercession.
