Biography

Blessed José Mulet Velilla, also known as José Teofilo, was a devout Catholic monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on June 28, 1917, in the small town of Mazaleón, located in the province of Teruel, Spain.

As a young man, José Mulet Velilla felt a deep calling to dedicate his life to God, and he entered the religious life by joining the Marist Brothers. This religious congregation, founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat, placed a strong emphasis on providing education to young people, especially in rural areas. José embraced this mission and became a committed and dedicated monk.

Unfortunately, José's life was cut short during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of the conflicts and social turmoil, he remained steadfast in his faith and committed to his religious vocation. Tragically, he was martyred for his beliefs and devotion on August 1, 1936, in the town of Palma de Cervellú, located in the province of Barcelona, Spain.

José Mulet Velilla's courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution and violence made him a shining example of faith and devotion. His martyrdom was seen as a true testament to his unwavering commitment to God and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, José Mulet Velilla was venerated by Pope Francis on June 3, 2013, with a decree of martyrology. This act of veneration marked a significant step towards his beatification, which took place on October 13, 2013, also under the pontificate of Pope Francis.

Today, Blessed José Mulet Velilla is remembered and honored as a holy example of faith and sacrifice. His life serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live their faith courageously in challenging times.
