Biography

Blessed José Medes Ferrís, also known as José Medes Ferrís, was born on 13 January 1885 in Algemesí, a town in the province of Valencia, Spain. He was baptized on the day of his birth, beginning his lifelong journey as a devout Catholic. Growing up in a farming family, José developed a deep connection with the land and a strong work ethic.

Throughout his life, José actively engaged in various Catholic organizations within the Archdiocese of Valencia. He became a member of both the Catholic Agricultural Union and Catholic Action, embracing the principles of social justice and the teachings of the Church. Furthermore, José served as a dedicated catechist, sharing his faith and knowledge with others in his community.

On 29 January 1913, José married Purificación Esteve Martínez, beginning a loving and committed partnership. Although the couple did not have any children, they provided a warm and nurturing home for those in need. Their generous spirits were evident during the Spanish Civil War, when they opened their doors to two Discalced Carmelite brothers and a Cistercian nun, providing them shelter and protection.

Despite their efforts to safeguard these religious individuals from the violence of the war, tragedy struck. The hidden Carmelite brothers and Cistercian nun were discovered, and all the occupants of José and Purificación's home, including José himself, were ruthlessly murdered on 12 November 1936, in Alcudia de Carlet, Valencia.

José Medes Ferrís was recognized as a martyr for the Catholic faith, having sacrificed his life in defense of his beliefs and the lives of those seeking refuge. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the principles of love, compassion, and Christian solidarity.

Following extensive investigations into his life and death, Pope John Paul II declared José Medes Ferrís venerable on 18 December 2000, acknowledging his heroic virtue and martyrdom. On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, officially recognizing him as Blessed José Medes Ferrís.
