Blessed José María Urruchi Ortiz was born on 11 February 1909 in Ayuelas, a small town in Burgos, Spain. He was a dedicated and devout Catholic who felt a calling to serve God at an early age. José María joined the Redemptorists, a religious congregation known for their mission work and preaching, on 24 August 1927.
After several years of formation and spiritual growth, José María made his solemn profession on 15 September 1930, committing himself fully to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Recognized for his exceptional dedication and love for the faith, he was ordained a priest on 20 October 1932.
During this time, Spain was experiencing great turmoil due to the Spanish Civil War, a conflict characterized by political, social, and religious tensions. Unfortunately, the Church faced tremendous persecution, and many priests and religious individuals became victims of violence.
Tragically, on 22 August 1936, Father José María Urruchi Ortiz was martyred for his faith. He was killed on the Andalucia highway in Madrid, Spain. His unwavering commitment to Christ and his steadfast courage in defending the teachings of the Catholic Church led to his ultimate sacrifice.
Despite the brevity of his life, Father José María's dedication and martyrdom have left a profound impact on the faithful. His selfless service and unwavering resolve in the face of persecution serve as an inspiration to all believers.
Recognizing his heroic witness, on 24 April 2021, Pope Francis decreed the martyrdom of José María Urruchi Ortiz, which marked an important step towards his beatification. Through his beatification, the Catholic Church officially recognizes him as Blessed José María Urruchi Ortiz, venerating him as a model of faith and a intercessor for the faithful.
As a Redemptorist and a martyr, Blessed José María Urruchi Ortiz exemplifies the virtues of dedication, sacrifice, and courage, inspiring believers to remain firm in their faith even in the most challenging circumstances.
