Biography

Blessed José María Ruano López, born on May 6, 1888, in Almeria, Spain, was a Catholic priest serving in the diocese of Almeria. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the people of his community.

Throughout his ministry, Blessed José María Ruano López was known for his deep faith, compassion, and commitment to social justice. He actively advocated for the rights of the poor and marginalized, particularly during a time of great political and social turmoil in Spain.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, when tensions ran high between political factions, Blessed José María Ruano López became a victim of religious persecution. On October 8, 1936, he was martyred along the Almería-Murcia highway in Rioja, Almeria, Spain. Despite the danger he faced, he remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to renounce his beliefs even in the face of death.

Blessed José María Ruano López's courageous martyrdom served as a testament to his unwavering dedication to Christ and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. His sacrifice became an inspiration to countless others, and his memory has been preserved as a shining example of faith and righteousness.

Recognizing the sanctity and heroism of his life, Pope Francis declared him venerable on June 14, 2016, with a decree of martyrdom. Following this, on March 25, 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed José María Ruano López, a solemn ceremony that took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification Mass was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Today, Blessed José María Ruano López is honored and remembered as a martyr, a role model, and an intercessor for those who face persecution for their faith. His feast day is celebrated on October 8th each year, providing an opportunity for Catholics around the world to remember and seek his intercession.
