Biography

Blessed José María Poyatosruiz, born on October 20, 1914, in Vilches, Jaén, Spain, was a devout young layman who lived in the diocese of Jaén. He is known for his deep faith, his commitment to Catholic Action, and his regular devotion to Eucharistic adoration.

Growing up in a small town in Spain, José María was raised in a devout Catholic family that instilled in him a strong love for God. As he grew older, he developed a deep spirituality and a desire to serve the Church. He became an active member of Catholic Action, an organization that sought to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church in various aspects of society.

While working at a factory, José María dedicated himself to his job wholeheartedly, always striving to give his best. But his true passion lay in his involvement in Catholic Action, where he worked tirelessly to promote the faith through various initiatives and projects. He sought to bring Christ's message of love and mercy to the people around him, especially through his involvement in the education and formation of youth.

One of José María's most distinguishing traits was his fervent devotion to Eucharistic adoration. He regularly spent long hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, finding solace, guidance, and strength in the presence of Christ. His deep faith and love for the Eucharist were a source of inspiration for those around him, as he encouraged others to encounter Jesus through this profound form of worship.

Unfortunately, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution swept through the country. José María, being a Christian activist and a faithful follower of Christ, became a target of the anti-religious sentiment prevailing at that time. He was taken from his home and executed for his unwavering commitment to his faith on October 3, 1936. José María Poyatosruiz was martyred, laying down his life for Christ and the Gospel.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on March 27, 2013, signifying that he lived a life of exemplary holiness. Subsequently, on October 27, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, offering public recognition of his martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, where the faithful gathered to honor and celebrate the life and sacrifice of this young Catholic activist.

Blessed José María Poyatosruiz stands as an inspiring example of selfless dedication to God and the Church.
