Biography

Blessed José María Polo Rejón, a priest of the archdiocese of Granada, Spain, was born on 28 February 1890 in Monachil, Granada. From a young age, he showed a deep sense of piety and a strong desire to serve God and his fellow men. After completing his studies in philosophy and theology, José María was ordained a priest.

José María dedicated his life to the pastoral care of souls, serving the faithful in various parishes within the diocese. He was known for his humility, simplicity, and compassion, always ready to assist those in need. As a faithful shepherd, José María sought to bring the light of Christ to his community through his preaching, his celebration of the sacraments, and his tireless work for the salvation of souls.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, causing immense turmoil and religious persecution within the country. Filled with unwavering courage and dedication to his faith, José María faced these dire circumstances with unwavering faith and determination. Aware of the risks involved, he refused to abandon his flock and chose to remain faithful to his priestly duties.

On 6 August 1936, in the town of Arenas del Rey, Granada, José María Polo Rejón was martyred for his faith. He was cruelly executed for refusing to renounce his allegiance to the Catholic Church and for refusing to abandon his priestly vocation. His bravery and unyielding fidelity to Christ in the face of persecution exemplify the true spirit of a martyr.

Many witnesses attest to the profound impact José María's life and martyrdom had on those around him. His selfless sacrifice became a powerful witness to the faith, inspiring others to remain steadfast in the face of adversity. In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared José María Polo Rejón venerable on 28 November 2019.

The beatification of José María Polo Rejón took place on 26 February 2022, celebrated at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain. This special ceremony, conducted by Pope Francis, recognized José María's supreme act of love and devotion to God and his Church.

Blessed José María Polo Rejón continues to be recognized as a model of faith, devotion, and courageous witness. His intercession is sought by many who face persecution, adversity, or struggle in their own lives. May his holy life and martyrdom inspire us to stand firm in our faith and trust in God's grace, always striving to imitate his example of selfless love and fidelity to Christ.
