Death: August 31, 1936
Blessed José María Palacio Montes, also known as Blessed José María of Sama, was a Dominican priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on November 9, 1901, in Bimenes, Siero, Asturias, Spain.
From a young age, José María showed great intelligence and a strong inclination towards the priesthood. He entered the Dominican Order and received his religious formation in Ocaña and El Rasillo, Spain. Known for his deep spirituality and commitment to his vocation, he was ordained a priest on July 28, 1929.
As a Dominican friar, Blessed José María dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings. He served as a preacher, catechist, and confessor, always striving to bring the message of the Gospel to those he encountered.
During the turbulent Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was widespread. In August 1936, Father José María found himself in a particularly dangerous situation in Sama, Langreo, Asturias. Despite the threat to his own life, he bravely continued to minister to his faithful and offer them spiritual guidance and consolation.
On August 31, 1936, Father José María Palacio Montes was arrested because of his faith and devotion to his ministry. He was accused of being a counter-revolutionary and an enemy of the state. Despite the attempts to silence his proclamation of the Gospel, he remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his beliefs.
Tragically, on that same day, Blessed José María was executed for his loyalty to the Catholic Church. He willingly embraced martyrdom, offering his life in witness to his unwavering faith in Christ. His death was a profound loss for the Dominican Order and the Catholic community in Spain, but his example of courage and dedication continues to inspire believers around the world.
Blessed José María Palacio Montes was formally recognized for his martyrdom on June 26, 2006, by Pope Benedict XVI. His beatification ceremony took place on October 28, 2007, also presided over by Pope Benedict XVI. His feast day is celebrated on August 31, the day of his martyrdom.
As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Blessed José María Palacio Montes is venerated as a witness to the faith and an intercessor for all those facing persecution for their beliefs. His life and sacrifice serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith even in the face of adversity.
