Blessed José María Fernández Sánchez, also known as Blessed José María Fernández y Sánchez, was a Catholic priest and member of the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was born on January 15, 1875, in Oviedo, Spain.
Father José María dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings. He joined the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, a religious order founded by St. Vincent de Paul, known for its apostolic missions and charity work. As a member of this congregation, Father José María embraced a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, following in the footsteps of his religious community.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father José María's faith, dedication, and commitment to his priesthood were tested. He remained steadfast in his convictions despite the dangers and challenges he faced. Unfortunately, his unwavering faith ultimately led to his martyrdom.
On October 23, 1936, in Vallecas, Madrid, Father José María Fernández Sánchez was martyred for refusing to renounce his faith. The fervent religious persecution of the time saw many priests targeted for their allegiance to the Catholic Church, and Father José María became a victim of this violence.
Recognizing his sacrifice and unwavering fidelity to the Catholic faith, Pope Francis proclaimed Father José María Fernández Sánchez a blessed on November 11, 2017. The beatification ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, along with other dignitaries and faithful followers.
Blessed José María Fernández Sánchez's feast day is celebrated on October 23, the anniversary of his martyrdom, as a reminder of his courageous witness to the faith and his ultimate sacrifice.
