Biography

Blessed José Luciano Ezequiel Huertagutiérrez, also known as José Luciano Ezequiel Huerta-Gutiérrez, was a devoted Catholic layman and father who lived in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Mexico. He worked as a mechanic and was known for his strong faith, particularly his deep devotion to the Eucharist and his regular attendance at daily Mass.

Born on March 18, 1880, in Magdalena, Jalisco, Mexico, José Luciano Huertagutiérrez grew up in a devout Catholic family. He had a brother named Blessed José Luciano Ezequiel Huerta-Gutiérrez, who also faced persecution and martyrdom during the Mexican Revolution.

Throughout his life, José Luciano Huertagutiérrez found solace and strength in his faith. He was a dedicated husband and loving father, embodying Christian values within his familial responsibilities. However, as the Mexican Revolution intensified, religious persecution became rampant, and many Catholics were forced to practice their faith in secret.

Despite the dangers and risks involved, José Luciano Huertagutiérrez remained steadfast in his devotion to the Catholic Church and the Eucharist. He would attend daily Mass, even if it meant putting his life in jeopardy. His unwavering commitment to God and the sacraments earned him the admiration and respect of his fellow faithful.

Tragically, in the midst of the religious persecution, José Luciano Huertagutiérrez was eventually apprehended by the authorities. He was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately executed for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith.

On April 3, 1927, José Luciano Huertagutiérrez was shot and killed in the cemetery of Mezquitán, Jalisco, Mexico. He accepted his martyrdom with courage and unwavering faith, becoming a true witness to Christ's teachings.

The heroic virtue and sacrificial life of José Luciano Huertagutiérrez were recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 22, 2004, he was venerated as a martyr by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree acknowledging his martyrdom. Later, on November 20, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, officially declaring him Blessed José Luciano Ezequiel Huertagutiérrez.
