Biography

Blessed José Loncán Campodarve, born on 18 April 1915 in Azlor, Huesca, Spain, was a devoted member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. José Loncán joined the Claretians and professed on 15 August 1931, committing his life to the service of God and the Church.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, José endured persecution and ultimately met a martyr's death. On 18 October 1936, in Cervera, Lleida, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering faith. His strong conviction and refusal to renounce his religious vows made him a target during this tumultuous period.

As a member of the Claretians, José Loncán Campodarve is among the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, who are commemorated together on the feast day of 1 February. Additionally, his individual feast day is celebrated on 18 October, the day of his martyrdom. These dates serve as an opportunity to remember and honor the sacrifices made by José and his companions.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared José Loncán Venerable on 21 December 2016. The Pope's decree affirmed the Church's recognition of José's virtuous life and offered him for veneration as a role model for the faithful.

Furthermore, José Loncán Campodarve was beatified on 21 October 2017 by Pope Francis, in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Pope. This important event marked the official recognition of José's martyrdom and his elevation to the status of the Blessed.
