Death: November 3, 1936
Blessed José Llorach Bretó, also known as Brother Crisóstomo, was a devoted member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He is particularly remembered for his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War.
José Llorach Bretó was born on February 9, 1881, in the town of Benicarló, located in Castellón de la Plana, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep faith and a compassionate nature. This led him to join the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle dedicated to the education of children and youth, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
As a member of the Brothers, José Llorach Bretó took on the religious name Brother Crisóstomo. He dedicated himself to the noble task of educating and shaping the lives of young students, instilling in them both academic knowledge and moral values. Through his tireless efforts, he became a beloved teacher and mentor to many.
However, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant. Brother Crisóstomo, along with countless other Catholics, found themselves targeted for their commitment to their faith. On November 3, 1936, in Barcelona, Spain, Brother Crisóstomo was martyred for his unwavering devotion to Christ. He valiantly gave his life, sacrificing himself rather than renouncing his religious beliefs.
The heroic witness of Brother Crisóstomo did not go unnoticed. His virtuous life and martyrdom touched the hearts of many, and he was posthumously venerated for his martyrdom on June 22, 2004, by Pope John Paul II, who recognized his Beatification. On October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially beatified José Llorach Bretó, acknowledging his status as a Blessed in the Catholic Church.
Blessed José Llorach Bretó's life and sacrifice serve as an inspiration to all believers. His unwavering commitment to his vocation as an educator and his steadfast faith in the face of persecution offer a profound example of courage, selflessness, and dedication to the teachings of Christ. He continues to be venerated on his feast day, which is celebrated annually on November 3rd.
