Biography

Blessed José León Montero was a layman born in 1896 in Córdoba, Spain. He lived during a time of intense religious persecution in Spain known as the Spanish Civil War. José León Montero was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith and actively participated in the life of his local diocese.

During the Spanish Civil War, religious tension reached its peak, leading to the martyrdom of many faithful Catholics, including José León Montero. On October 8, 1936, he was martyred in Belmez/Doña Rama, Córdoba, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs.

José León Montero's life and sacrificial death were recognized by the Catholic Church as a testimony of his faith. On November 23, 2020, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, venerated José León Montero as a Blessed. This declaration was seen as an affirmation of his holiness and place among the saints.

Continuing to honor his memory, Pope Francis proceeded to beatify José León Montero on October 16, 2021. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro presided over the joyful celebration, acknowledging José León Montero's witness to the faith.

Blessed José León Montero stands as a model of courage and faithfulness in the face of persecution.
