Biography

Blessed José Ignacio Gordón De La Serna, also known as Father José Ignacio Gordón, was born on 13 October 1902 in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Spain. He joined the congregation of the Claretians and made his religious profession on 20 May 1923. After years of dedicated service and theological studies, he was ordained a priest on 22 September 1929.

Father José Ignacio Gordón was a devout and committed priest, known for his unwavering faith and love for God. He dedicated himself to preaching the Gospel and providing spiritual guidance to the faithful. He served in various parishes, touching the lives of countless individuals through his ministry.

Unfortunately, during a turbulent period in Spanish history, Father José Ignacio Gordón faced persecution and violence. He became a victim of the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936. On 13 August 1936, he was martyred in Alboraya, Valencia, Spain, bravely witnessing to his faith until his last breath.

In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Father José Ignacio Gordón De La Serna was venerated by the Catholic Church on 21 December 2016, when Pope Francis declared his martyrdom through a decree. This acknowledgment of his sacrifice paved the way for his beatification.

The beatification of Blessed José Ignacio Gordón De La Serna took place on 21 October 2017. The ceremony was held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato. This momentous event celebrated the life, faith, and ultimate sacrifice of Father José Ignacio Gordón, acknowledging him as a blessed and a model of Christian virtue.

Today, Blessed José Ignacio Gordón De La Serna is remembered and venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His feast days are observed on 13 August, the day of his martyrdom, and on 1 February, along with the other Claretian Martyrs. His legacy continues to inspire and encourage believers to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of adversity.
