Biography

Blessed José Grijalvo Medel, also known as Ramón of the Virgin of Carmel, was a Discalced Carmelite priest who met a tragic end during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 29 March 1896 in Calahorra, Logroño, Spain.

From a young age, José felt a calling to the priesthood and entered the Discalced Carmelite Order, known for its emphasis on prayer and contemplation. He was known for his exceptional piety and deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, particularly the Virgin of Carmel.

Ordained as a priest, José dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his ministry, serving the faithful and guiding them in their spiritual lives. However, his commitment to his faith and his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs placed him in a precarious position during the turbulent era of the Spanish Civil War.

As the war raged on, religious persecution escalated, and the Catholic clergy became targets for violence. Despite the dangers, José bravely continued to celebrate Mass and provide spiritual guidance to those in need. However, his activities did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually captured by forces opposed to the Catholic Church.

On 31 July 1936, José Grijalvo Medel was martyred in "Los Cobertizos," Toledo, Spain. His steadfast faith and refusal to denounce his religious convictions led to his execution.

The courageous life and martyrdom of Blessed José Grijalvo Medel did not go unrecognized. On 28 April 2006, Pope Benedict XVI formally recognized his martyrdom, and on 28 October 2007, he was beatified by the same pontiff. His feast day is observed on 31 July each year, as a day to honor his sacrifice and dedication to his faith.

Blessed José Grijalvo Medel serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding us of the profound courage and devotion exhibited by those who have laid down their lives for their faith. Through his intercession, may we find strength and guidance in our own spiritual journeys.
