Biography

Blessed José Giménez Reyes, also known as Bl. José Giménez, was a priest of the archdiocese of Granada, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 20 September 1889 in Santafé, Granada, Spain.

As a young man, José Giménez felt a deep calling to the priesthood. He entered the seminary in Granada, where he received a solid formation and was ordained a priest. Known for his holiness and commitment to serving others, he dedicated his life to the pastoral care of the faithful.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was widespread, José Giménez fearlessly continued to carry out his ministry, despite the dangers he faced. He remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering in his dedication to proclaiming the Gospel and administering the sacraments.

Sadly, on 2 August 1936, José Giménez was captured by anti-Catholic forces and martyred for his beliefs. He met his death in Loja, Granada, Spain, courageously remaining faithful to his priestly vocation until the end. His martyrdom is a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church, even in the face of great adversity.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and the sacrifice he made for his faith, Blessed José Giménez Reyes was venerated on 28 November 2019 by Pope Francis, who declared him a martyr. This decree of martyrdom cleared the way for his beatification, which took place on 26 February 2022, also by the decision of Pope Francis.

The beatification ceremony for Bl. José Giménez was held at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain, where he had served the faithful during his earthly life. It was a momentous occasion that brought together clergy, religious, and lay faithful to honor and celebrate his life of holiness and martyrdom.

Bl. José Giménez is remembered as a faithful and devoted priest who courageously gave his life in witness to his faith. His beatification serves as an inspiration to all Christians to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to never waiver in their commitment to Christ, even in the face of persecution or adversity.
