Biography

Blessed José Garvi Calvente, born on 1 January 1881 in Madrid, Spain, was a devout married layman who lived during a tumultuous era in Spanish history. He was a devoted member of the Association of the Miraculous Medal and lived a life dedicated to his faith and the service of God.

José Garvi Calvente was born in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, and grew up in a society deeply influenced by Catholicism. His early experiences and upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of devotion and a commitment to his faith, which guided him throughout his life.

Tragically, on 21 August 1936, José Garvi Calvente was martyred for his Catholic beliefs in Aravaca, a suburb in the city of Madrid. His steadfast devotion to his faith and his refusal to renounce it, even in the face of persecution, made him a heroic witness of Christ's love and sacrifice.

The Catholic Church recognized the holiness and martyrdom of José Garvi Calvente, and on 23 March 2017, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue and acknowledging his status as a martyr. This decree of martyrdom signifies that he willingly sacrificed his life out of love for God and his unwavering commitment to his Catholic beliefs.

Following the declaration of his martyrdom, José Garvi Calvente was beatified by Pope Francis on 11 November 2017. The beatification ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid presided over this momentous occasion.

The beatification of Blessed José Garvi Calvente serves as a reminder of the extraordinary courage and fidelity of countless individuals who lived out their Catholic faith amidst great adversity. His life and martyrdom bear witness to the strength and power of faith even in the darkest of times.
