Blessed José García Mas

Biography

Blessed José García Mas was born on June 11, 1896, in Pego, Alicante, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and felt a strong calling to the priesthood from a young age. After completing his studies in theology, José was ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain.

As a priest, José dedicated himself to serving the spiritual needs of his parishioners, providing them with guidance, sacraments, and care. He was known for his compassion, humility, and love for the poor and marginalized. José had a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, which he fostered in others through his heartfelt sermons.

Unfortunately, Blessed José García Mas lived during a tumultuous time in Spanish history. The Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, and the country was thrown into a period of violent conflict between different political factions. During this time, many clergy and religious became targets of persecution for their faith.

Tragically, on September 18, 1936, Blessed José García Mas was martyred in La Pedrera de Gandía, Valencia, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church. He was one of the many victims who lost their lives during this dark period of Spanish history.

Despite his untimely death, the memory of Blessed José García Mas lived on. His reputation for holiness and martyrdom spread, and his fellow believers began to venerate him. On December 18, 2000, Pope John Paul II officially declared José García Mas venerable, recognizing his heroic virtue and his sacrificial death for the faith.

Then, on March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, raising him to the status of Blessed. Blessed José García Mas serves as an inspiration for Catholics and all people of faith, reminding them of the importance of standing firm in their beliefs, even in the face of persecution and adversity.

Today, the feast day of Blessed José García Mas is celebrated on September 18th, the anniversary of his martyrdom.
